Editorial Review

July 2008

A spa’s relaxation lounge says a lot about the kind of experience you’re about to have. And Spa Velia’s Tuscan-inspired design doesn’t spare a single detail. Owners Chris Guimond, Dana Stallings and Jody Rogers aren’t just spa enthusiasts; they are well-traveled experts and active spa industry members. They knew the lounge would play a key role at their downtown San Diego day spa, so they thoughtfully designed it to feel like a home away from home—only a little more luxurious and decadent.

Alcoves provide a sense of escape from the real world. Softly upholstered lounge chairs are easy to sink in to. Candles provide soft lighting and create the perfect backdrop for bliss. What’s more, your escape begins with a pomegranate mimosa or a frosted mug of beer. What better way to end a long day or kick off the weekend?

You’ll be pampered from the moment you walk into this urban day spa. We already mentioned the pomegranate mimosas. The feel-good details don’t stop there. Each guest is provided with one of the softest spa robes around (yes, it is chenille) and encouraged to soak under a European showerhead, a rarity among day spas.

MUST DO’S…

The Velia Facial: Juliana Rodrigues, Spa Velia’s esthetics director, is passionate about her profession and the lasting impact she can have on someone’s life. That kind of commitment makes a world of difference in a client’s spa experience. Velia’s signature facial, for instance, is more than hydration and skin renewal – it also incorporates a very relaxing head, neck, shoulder and scalp massage. When administered by Juliana’s hands, the treatment instantly induces sleep.

Grab a quick drink: If you’re short on time, drop in for the Limoncello Salt Infusion, 25 moisturizing minutes for your skin. The treatment begins with an invigorating exfoliation, followed by a scrub of sea salt with citrus oils and honey. Then your skin is hydrated with a lemongrass moisturizer containing Melissa and lavender essential oils. How’s that for a quickie?

Make it a night on the town: For a memorable date, reserve an after-dark couple’s massage at Spa Velia. Or better, yet, treat yourself and your date to the Amore spa package, which begins with a geranium thermal wrap and ends with a soothing rub down. Spa Velia is located within walking distance to the restaurants in Little Italy and downtown. And to top off your evening of indulgence, go for a slice of chocolate heaven at Extraordinary Desserts—also just minutes away.

MOST POPULAR TREATMENT FOR HER: Drench -- 150 minutes. Begins with an invigorating citrus exfoliation and continues with a luxurious conditioning scalp treatment using Spa Velía's own mango-papaya haircare line. The treatment continues with a visit to the spa’s eucalyptus-infused steam room and concludes with a full body massage using lemongrass body balm.

MOST POPULAR TREATMENT FOR HIM: An 80-minute deep tissue massage or hot sea stone massage.

INSIDER TIPS:

Busiest time at the spa: All evenings and after-work hours; and Thursday through Monday.

OWNERS’ FAVORITES:

Dana’s: Ohhhh, it’s so hard to pick just one! Aside from being a massage and facial junkie, I have a few special body treatment favorites.  Whenever I am feeling especially indulgent and want to be nurtured, I simply love the Milk and Honey Cocoon!  (80 minutes)  The silky and warm feeling of natural honey being massaged on your body, followed by warm milk being drenched all over your body is simply decadent and blissful!  Your stress simply melts away!

Jody's: If I "HAD" to choose one it would always go back to an 80-minute deep tissue massage, including scalp.  I can totally let go during 80 minutes and not wonder what is coming next.

Chris’: I'm a package kind of guy so my favorite treatment would have to be the Velia Voyage, which includes body treatment, massage and facial.  Does this count for picking just one treatment? The combination of a massage, facial, and body treatment within the same experience is simply phenomenal!  I think the combination of these treatments is probably what inspired me to get into the spa business.
