Spa Velia Pledges to Become a Green Spa
San Diego's popular luxury day spa becomes one of first 20 spas nationwide to join the Green Spa Network.
August 2008 -- Spa Velia, a luxury day spa located in downtown’s Little Italy neighborhood, has pledged to become a green spa, joining a small group of spas across the country who are the early members of the Green Spa Network (GSN). Founded by spa industry leaders and business owners, GSN’s mission is to facilitate education, research and alliances in sustainable business practices and to promote sustainability throughout the spa industry.
As a green spa, Spa Velia has made it a top priority to reduce their environmental footprint, as well as sharing their concern for the earth’s well being with their guests. Dana Stallings, founder and principal of Spa Velia, says, “It’s about being committed to the process and starting with small steps that lead to larger steps in the right direction.” Stallings explains that they have started using recycle-able gift cards and bags, plastic drinking cups made from corn in the relaxation lounge, switched to green laundry and housekeeping products and are working towards having only environmentally friendly, fair trade skin care and gift products offered at the spa. Spa Velia also offers tips in a guest newsletter that can help others to find ways to be greener. They are currently creating appreciation gifts for employees and VIP client – re-usable grocery bags and aluminum water bottles imprinted with the Spa Velia logo. In the next six months, construction is planned for an expansion of Spa Velia. “We are committed to trying to reduce the environmental impact by using eco-friendly paint and building materials as much as possible,“ says Stallings.
“This is an exciting time,” says Michael Stusser, Chairman of the Board of the Green Spa Network and founder of Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary. “People are really starting to understand the importance of sustainability as an issue for the planet. The response to the Green Spa Network has been incredible.” The GSN defines a green spa as a center for healing, wellness and aesthetics where reducing environmental impact is a top priority. Pledge members of the Network strive to conserve energy and water resources, recycle and use recycle-able materials, use natural and organic skin care products and to be responsible to their spa guests, employees and to the planet. “Spas are places for a transformational experience, and there’s an obvious connection between personal and planetary well-being,” says Stusser. “It’s a natural fit for the spa industry to take a leadership role in this important movement – the Network can help provide tools, resources and networking opportunities to facilitate making these positive changes.” Stusser encourages spas and other businesses that want to make a difference to become members of the GSN. A green spa can offer spa goers a more naturally healthy experience. By reducing the stressors of modern life (noise, waste, toxins, pollutions), a green spa creates a more relaxing environment, where the body can be in harmony with its surroundings and with nature. This fusion of personal and planetary well being fits in perfectly with Spa Velia’s philosophy. The owners’ motto is sensory perfection, and gently curving architecture, earthy colors, low lighting and carefully selected furnishings all have been designed to offer spa guests a retreat from the stress of daily life -- one part comforting sanctuary, one part Tuscan villa. “This is an opportunity to take our philosophy to the next level. By making a contribution to the effort to keep our planet cleaner and healthier, I believe we will all benefit with healthier minds and bodies,” says Stallings.
