Spa for Men
Finding bliss is no longer reserved for women – spas now offer treatments, ambience, even drinks that cater to the male persuasion.
On a summer day in San Diego, you might find the city’s coolest guys and most refined men drinking a Black and Tan or a Pinot Grigio at Well-Heeled Salon & Spa in East Village, downtown’s hip and haute neighborhood. Slate-blue walls, exposed industrial pipes, custom metalwork and dark leather lounge chairs aren’t what you’d expect at a San Diego day spa, but neither is a group of well-dressed men. At Well-Heeled, however, owners Mario Vigil and Alex Mendez have designed the interiors to reflect a modern luxury day spa and created a menu of spa services that appeal to men who come from as far away as England.
Spa treatments include stone therapy massage, revitalizing facial and reflexology. At the salon, men can choose the gentlemen’s cut, a damage remedy for hair and scalp, or the seven-step straight-razor shave. And while Well-Heeled initially opened in 2007 as San Diego’s first spa for men, this year it expanded its services to include an array of spa treatments for women.
“Most spas focus their design on water and botanicals, while salons are usually hip and trendy” says Mendez. “Our focus was to create a truly high-end salon and spa that is as lavish and luxurious as those you would find in New York or London.”
To create the appropriate image for Well-Heeled Salon & Spa, the owners designed the salon and treatment rooms to be gender neutral and modern yet comfortable. A fountain imported from Italy greets guests in the lobby, and in the salon, leather lounge chairs are comfortable spots to drink tea, coffee, beer, or liquors that can be drank neat or with tonic.
The 2,665-foot spa and salon features five treatment rooms (including a wet room), separate his and hers lockers, and three spa pedicure stations. And its location can’t be beat—inside the Diamond View Tower and just steps to Petco Park. In fact, Well-Heeled’s side doors open onto Park at the Park, allowing for great views of the baseball field and spectators.
But, Mendez says, it’s not the views that bring clients back to Well-Heeled Salon & Spa. It’s the top-notch service in a uniquely chic environment. Among the popular treatments are the Del Mar Sea Mud Wrap with Sea Salt Exfoliation and the Gentlemen’s Facial

The Masculine Approach
Now that men make up more than 30 percent of the spa-going population, more and more spas are adding services that appeal directly to the masculine side. Here are a few…
The Spa at Four Seasons Aviara, Carlsbad
Golfer's Spa Suite Experience
In a private indoor/outdoor suite which features an oversized whirlpool, lounge area with fireplace and a practice putting green, begin your spa experience with a 30-minute exfoliating hand scrub and massage, focusing on the specific muscle groups used while gripping a golf club. A 50-minute body massage incorporates a variety of stretches and muscle manipulation. High-tension areas used in the golf swing are soothed, including the back, shoulders and neck. Finally, a paraffin dip penetrates the skin and acts as a sealant, leaving the golfer’s hands hydrated and smooth for their next round. A premium cigar amenity and an “Arnold Palmer” beverage put the finishing touches on an unforgettable Aviara golf getaway.
